What is a DPE?
FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) is an experienced aviation professional authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration to conduct practical tests for pilot certification and ratings. DPEs evaluate applicants' aeronautical knowledge, skills, and decision-making abilities to ensure they meet the standards outlined in the FAA's Practical Test Standards or Airman Certification Standards. They administer oral exams, flight tests, and review logbooks to verify compliance with training requirements. While DPEs work closely with the FAA, they are not FAA employees but serve as representatives to maintain the safety and competency standards of the aviation industry. Their role is critical in pilot certification processes.
