Instrument Rating

Instrument Rating Check Required Documentation:

  • Photo ID - US DL, Passport, Gov ID Card (for alternative forms of identification see FAA order 8900.1 vol. 5, ch 1, sec 3)

  • Medical - FAA medical, see § 61.23 and/or 14 CFR Part 68

  • Pilot Certificate

  • FAA Airman Knowledge Test Report - Unexpired and taken within the last 24 months. Physical copy required on day of practical test.

  • 141 Graduation Certificate (Only if you have been trained under FAA Part 141)

All Pilot Logbook Endorsements for this test (IAW AC-61-65) - Work with your CFI, should you have any questions about these:

  • TSA Endorsement of U.S. citizenship: “§1552.15(c), or as appropriate

  • Prerequisites for practical test: §61.39(a)(6)(i) and (ii)

  • Aeronautical knowledge test: §61.35(a)(1), 61.65(a) and (b)

  • Flight proficiency practical test: §61.65(a)(6)

  • Review of deficiencies identified on airman knowledge test: §61.39(a)(6)(iii) as required

  • Retest after failure: §61.49, as required

  • Logbook - Photos, scans, digital versions of your pilot logbook showing compliance with § 61.65(d) or § 141 Appendix C

  • Log of ground training in the areas of operation noted in §61.65, as appropriate - Photos, scans, digital versions of your pilot logbook showing compliance with § 61.65(d) or § 141 Appendix C

Aircraft Documents:

  • Aircraft Airworthiness Certificate

  • Aircraft Registration

  • Most Recent Aircraft Weight and Balance data - Typically from the POH/AFM

  • Most Recent 100 hr Inspection, as required - Airframe, Propeller, and Engine logbooks

  • Most Recent Annual Inspection - Airframe, Propeller, and Engine logbooks

  • Most Recent ATC Transponder Test/Inspection

  • Most Recent Altimeter System and Altitude Reporting Equipment Test/Inspection

  • Most Recent Record of Applicable Airworthiness Directives

  • Most Recent Record of Applicable Instructions for Continued Airworthiness, as required

  • Answer to the question does this aircraft meet the minimum equipment requirements for additional category/class test in accordance with §61.45, the appropriate Airman Certification Standards, and FAA 8900.1, V5, C2? [i.e., for a test with instrument privileges, does the airplane have all of the equipment needed (and it is operable) for IFR flight, precision, and non-precision approaches?]
